Description

Main Street Mission is a 1970 lithograph by the notable African American artist William Pajaud (1925–2015). The specific print numbered 23/56, indicates it is the 23rd in a limited edition of 56 prints.

About the artwork

Artist: William "Bill" Pajaud was a New Orleans-born painter and printmaker who later became a prominent figure in the Los Angeles art scene. Known for his expressive watercolors and keen eye for community life, his works often reflected his experiences with jazz funerals and urban street scenes. Pajaud was also a respected curator and was instrumental in developing a major collection of African American art for the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company.
Medium: The piece is a lithograph, a method of printmaking that allowed Pajaud to create multiple copies of his work. The edition size of 56 makes this print relatively scarce.
Subject matter: The "Main Street Mission" print is part of a 1970 series of "Six Genre Scenes" depicting aspects of Black life and culture. Pajaud created this series following the Watts Riots in Los Angeles, a period that he later claimed marked a turning point in his art toward documenting Black subjects.
